PRODUCT NAME A THERMOPLASTIC STARCH BIOCOMPOSITE FILM AND METHODS OF PRODUCING THEREOF
ABSTRACT The invention disclosed the formulation and processing method to produce a biodegradable TPS biocomposite film. The TPS biocomposite films comprised of thermoplastic starch (TPS) as the matrix, microcrystalline cellulose (MC) and nano-bentonite (NB) as the hybrid fillers. The NB is prepared through pre-swelling method to obtain loosely packed platelets structure for better dispersion in TPS matrix. Meanwhile MC was extracted from raw natural fiber through a series of pre-chemical treatment. The hybrid fillers (MC/NB) can be dispersed well in the TPS matrix and can significantly improve the tensile properties of the TPS based film, especially the tensile strength and toughness. The hybrid fillers of MC and NB in the ratio of 1:4 induce positive synergic effect in the TPS matrix and induce high toughness of the films. The invented film is environmentally friendly compared to the conventional plastics and can be applied for packaging application.
