| ABSTRACT |
The invention relates to a sustainable biocarrier comprising EcoLignin-EPS
derived from Cocos Nucifera coir for use in microbial electrochemical systems. The
biocarrier features a high-lignin structural matrix that provides a natural, porous
scaffolding for the colonization of electroactive microorganisms. Unlike conventional
petroleum-based synthetic media, the invention utilizes the inherent biochemical
properties of coconut coir to regulate the secretion of extracellular polymeric
substances (EPS) from a wastewater inoculum. This regulation promotes the
formation of a thin, compact biofilm structure with a balance protein-to-polysaccharide
ratio, which is essential for enhancing extracellular electron transfer (EET) and
increasing power density. The invention effectively addresses the technical
bottleneck of low power density caused by excessive EPS accumulation on
electrodes while providing a biodegradable, eco-friendly alternative that eliminates
microplastic shedding and reduces the carbon footprint of wastewater treatment
infrastructure.
