PRODUCT NAME A.R.E.S HELMET: ADVANCE RESCUE & EMERGENCY SMART HELMET
ABSTRACT First responders and search-and-rescue (SAR) personnel frequently operate in high-risk, unstructured environments where environmental hazards, structural instability, and degraded communication channels severely compromise operational safety and situational awareness. Traditional personal protective equipment (PPE) offers passive impact protection but lacks real-time diagnostic and communication capabilities required for modern incident management. To address these critical limitations, this paper presents the A.R.E.S. Helmet (Advance Rescue & Emergency Smart Helmet)¿an Internet of Things (IoT)-driven wearable protection system designed for real-time hazard monitoring, responder tracking, and automated emergency alerting. The proposed system integrates a multi-sensor network controlled by an onboard low-power edge microcontroller (ESP32/ARM Cortex). A 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) combined with custom threshold-detection algorithms continuously monitors angular velocity and linear acceleration to detect sudden impacts, high-altitude falls, and prolonged responder immobility (man-down events). Concurrently, an environmental sensing array monitors ambient temperature, toxic gas concentrations (e.g., carbon monoxide and combustible gases), and smoke density to alert personnel of imminent atmospheric hazards. Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry integrated with a hybrid dual-transmission wireless architecture (combining long-range LoRa mesh networks and cellular 4G/GSM connectivity) ensures robust, real-time location tracking and telemetry transmission even in remote or off-grid operational scenarios. Furthermore, an integrated first-person video capture and thermal imaging module streams situational feeds directly to off-site command centers. Experimental evaluation demonstrates high accuracy in fall detection, low transmission latency, and extended battery runtime under continuous operation. The A.R.E.S. Helmet significantly enhances situational awareness, shortens incident response times, and elevates safety standards for emergency responders in critical operations.
