PRODUCT NAME Rich Compost For Landfill Top Cover
ABSTRACT Rice husks are by-products of rice paddy milling industries and each ton of dried rice paddy produces about 20 percent husks. According to Chandrasekhar et al., (2003), for every ton of rice produced, about 0.23 tons of rice husks are formed. Based on the Eighth Malaysia Plan (2001-2005) report, the production of paddy in the country is increasing, with an increase of 4 percent from 1995 to 2000 and an increase of up to 20 percent from 2000 to 2005, which are 2.235 million tons to 2.813 million tons. It is expected that the husk production will be approximately 562,600 tons. The husk has traditionally been used as an energy source within the rice mills themselves. However, there is still some surplus rice husk remaining unused in the mills. To prevent pollution caused by open-air burning or dumping of rice husk, this research has been conducted to enhanced utilization of rice husk. RicH COMPOST (Rice Husk COMPOST) will act as landfill top cover. Compost provides an excellent environment for the methanotrophic bacteria that oxidize methane. The top cover has reduced the emission of landfill gas into the atmosphere after 25 and 50 days after the experiment conducted.
