PRODUCT NAME A Novel Single Photodiode Detection Technique For OCDMA Network Applications
ABSTRACT The rapid progress in video-based Internet applications is increasing the demand for efficient optical communication systems. Therefore, spectral-amplitude coding optical code-division multiple access (SAC-OCDMA) is an attractive candidate to flexibly implement the optical access networks used to deliver bandwidth-intensive networking applications. These applications such as video conferencing, 3D video, multichannel high-definition television (HDTV), and ultra high-speed Internet to residential customers are expected to become the next major success commercial applications for OCDMA system. This can be attributed to their fairness, truly asynchronous transmission with low latency, improved information security, and dynamic bandwidth assignment. The dominant noises in incoherent OCDMA systems are due to the presence of other users on the same band, resulting phase-induced intensity noise (PIIN) and multiple access interference (MAI). Therefore; in this invention, we propose a single photodiode detection (SPD) technique for spectrally efficient access network based on OCDMA technology. The newly developed approach is capable of eliminating the impact of both PIIN and MAI effectively in the optical domain. This allows requiring only a single photodiode to be used rather than two photodiodes as in typical subtraction detection schemes. The reduction in the number of photodiodes will also reduce the cost of the receiver, as well as the generated shot noise. Based on modified double weight (MDW) codes, results reveal that SPD technique enhances OCDMA system performance significantly compared to other typical subtraction detection schemes
