PRODUCT NAME Bio-Based Briquette From Banana Peel
ABSTRACT Banana fruits are widely cultivated and highly consumed in Malaysia, thus creating an issue of disposal of banana peels. In the same time, environmental protection and material recycling are important matter today. Banana peel represents about 30-40 g over 100g of fruit weight which can generate abundant waste (Phatcharaporn et al., 2009) and the peelings are usually disposed in landfills as industrial by-products. Currently, banana peel constitutes about 20 ¿ 40% of the total waste generated in common banana planting country. Therefore, reutilization of this agro-waste materials into biomass briquette is one of the solution. Biomass briquette is introduced as an alternate source of fuels and can be used either for domestic and industrial purposes as it is easier to handle, transport and store. Hence, the use of biomass briquette can earn Carbon Credits for reducing emission in the atmosphere. The briquette was produce by using hot press and a mould with a dimension of 3.0 cm x 3.0 cm. the determination of the physical characteristics of the briquette (moisture content, ash content and burning rate) is done with the use of moisture analyzer MX-50. The experiment was done under control condition at UniMAP Agrotechnology Research Station.
