ABSTRACT |
A cathodic protection system for reducing rate of a metal structure and/or preventing the corrosion comprises an electrochemical cell having a positive terminal connected to an anode buried in the ground and a negarive terminal connected to the metal structure. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a cathodic protection system comprising an electrochemical cell having a positive terminal connected to an anode buried in the ground and a negative terminal connected to a metal structure to be protected. Preferably, the electrochemical cell is a galvanic cell developed by taking into consideration of material potential difference in the galvanic series. Another object of the invention is to provide a current to the cathodic protection system located at an area which does not have a source of electricity. The electrochemical cell of the invention serves as a long life battery to protect the metal structure. A further object of the invention is to introduce a cathodic protection system which allows the anode buried in the ground to be of any conductive materials. Due to the presence of a protection current, it is not essential to use a highly electronegative potential material such as magnesium as the anode for application in a high resistivity medium like dry soil, sandy soil, concrete, etc. Yet another object of the invention is to provide a cathodic protection system which is effective in providing a corrosion protection to amteal structure and efficient in term of energy so as to avoid energy wastage
